Online July 2020 Conference
We are happy to announce our plans for the Online version of our conference for 2020! The conference will take place between July 15-20 and will include a mix of asynchronous and synchronous presentations. Synchronous presentations will be scheduled for July 16th and 17th (the original dates of the conference). Participants will have until the 20th to interact asynchronously with other conference delegates through a closed conference system. Presenters will have the option to choose between a variety of presentation formats: posters, papers, GIMME-5 (5 minute talks), Brief Oral Presentations (10-12 minutes), Oral Presentations (15-20 minutes), Symposia/Panel Presentations (1 - 1.5 hours, 3 to 6 presenters), Workshops (30-2 hours), and Roundtable Discussions (20-60 minutes).
If your presentation was accepted for 2020, then that same presentation is also accepted for the online event - AND you will have the option to either present again in person in 2021 or to present a modified/updated version in 2021. We aim to be as flexible as possible in order to meet everyone’s needs and to build two unique events for each year! We will be contacting you shortly to find out a) if you plan to present at the online conference, b) your desired presentation format, and c) your scheduling preferences.
We will be publishing a special issue of Psychology & Sexuality based on presentations from Preach 2020 Online. To learn more about how to submit your manuscript for consideration, please click the button below.
Virtual Venue
We have selected Slack as our Virtual Conference Venue.
Access Control & Security: We can control who has access to the conference space and content through our registration system.
Identity Management: Conference attendees can control what information they share about themselves with others within the platform.
Time Zone Friendly: We can build a conference experience that will support asynchronous and synchronous experiences, thereby allowing people from anywhere in the world to participate.
Networking: What fun is a conference without interaction? Slack allows for multiple forms of communication between participants, including some pretty fun random networking set ups (think academic speed dating!)
User Friendly: Many people already use Slack for other purposes, but even if you don’t, it is an easy to use platform. We recommend downloading it onto your computer, but it can also be accessed within a browser. There are also apps for mobile and tablet use.
Affordability: Slack will allow us to build a unique conference experience within the budget that we have (which is teeny tiny ;)
COVID-19 has taken a great deal from so many around the world. In the grand scheme of things, missing out on in-person conference events is a small and relatively meaningless loss compared to the loss of life, livelihood, security, freedom and well-being. Nonetheless, conferences are important ways for scholars to share and discuss their work. For attendees of Preaching to the Choir, a conference like this can be one of the few opportunities to engage with others who are also dedicated to LGBTQ research. We hope that this conference experience will at least provide some continuity in connection between scholars and help us to discover new ways of connecting that we may be able to continue using in the future in order to make more traditional conferences more widely accessible.
We ask for your patience as we chart this new course together - there may be some bumps along the way, but we’re confident it will all work out in the end!

#Preach2018 is coming to an end. It's been a rollercoaster of emotion! Amazing stories, research, experiences and people who have come here from all over the world. It's not often that you go to a conference that feels special. This one definitely does. pic.twitter.com/0oMCj1Vn6O

More than 79 different locations represented among the 115 delegates of #Preach2018! 6 of the 7 continents are represented. We must do better next time to represent the Gay Penguins from Antarctica! pic.twitter.com/CyEQC8kZek
